NOTE: During the regular season, this column is a living document through Tuesday morning. I'll be updating as needed after team press conferences, imaging reports, Monday Night Football injuries, etc. Major changes to the content will be noted in red.
Scroll to the bottom of this article for a quick look table of the week's most pressing injury situations and a review of players on injured reserve / PUP / NFI.
Footballguys will have close and detailed coverage of all injuries this season. Here's a look at my expected schedule. I will do my best to stick to this. Work and family responsibilities may sometimes cause brief delays.
Monday Injury Rounds: Posted Sunday night, updated through Tuesday AM. Detailed analysis of the week's injuries with table for quick review. Offensive injuries will be live Sunday night. Critical defensive and offensive line injuries will be added throughout the day on Monday. I'll be updating with news and analysis through Tuesday.
Midweek Injury Expectations: Posted Wednesday night. Analysis of the practice participation report with a table including my projection of each injured player's likely game status. Will include discussion of any major breaking injury news.
Sunday Gameday Expectations: Posted by Saturday afternoon, updated through Sunday morning inactives. Will include individual player blurbs with detailed thoughts on the week's injury news and my speculation on player availability and limitations. Will include table highlighting each day's practice participation, official game status, and my availability expectation.
I'll be contributing to our waiver wire podcast (Tuesday release) and our live Sunday morning pregame show (10 ET Sunday on YouTube). I will also be retweeting key pieces of news and my own reaction and analysis, so make sure you're following me @JeneBramel and checking my timeline on Twitter throughout the week.
INJURY ROUNDS
A.J. Green | Right foot injury | Week-to-Week | Doubtful Week 10
Green minimized his injury in the locker room last week but reports have gotten progressively worse over the past seven days. Green was seen in a walking boot early in the week, but local writers were still reporting Green's injury as minor and the immobilization as precautionary. Sunday morning, Adam Schefter tweeted Green will visit Dr. Robert Anderson this week for further evaluation of a foot injury and all options -- from rehab to surgery -- remain on the table. Schefter reported Green is "expected to miss some games."
While Schefter wasn't specific about Green's diagnosis, an injury that initially looks like turf toe but later shows more swelling than expected, requires prolonged immobilization, and necessitates a visit with sports medicine's pre-eminent foot and ankle surgeon likely involves a ligament tear behind the big toe joint, a region called the plantar plate. These ligament tears aren't in the Lisfranc family but are often unstable enough to require surgery. Sean Lee needed surgery for this type of injury in 2012. DeMarco Murray was able to finish his 2017 season with a lower grade injury.
With the Bengals competing for a divisional title and playoff berth, Green will likely push for rehab. Surgery would be season-ending. If Green's injury can be rehabbed, he's likely to miss at least four weeks while the ligament tear heals.
Monday Update: According to Adam Schefter, Green will not require surgery and will rehab for another 1-2 weeks. He'll then be re-evaluated to determine whether he can begin football-related activity and prepare to play. Marvin Lewis wouldn't provide a timetable for Green's return. Expect to hear the team refer to Green as week-to-week for the foreseeable future but it's unlikely Green returns before Week 12 and that's likely overly optimistic.
Chris Carson | Hip / Groin strain | Week-to-Week | Questionable Week 10
Carson felt good enough during pregame warmups to make the active roster and start Sunday's game. Unfortunately, his injury tightened up at halftime and he was unable to continue. Pete Carroll described Carson's injury as a hip / groin condition after the game. That raises the possibility of a core muscle injury. Those injuries are difficult to play through and generally require surgery. With Carson frequently finding himself unable to play and the Seahawks' running back depth chart relatively stocked with talent, it's possible Carson will need multiple weeks off. Hopefully, his injury isn't in the core muscle category and he returns more quickly.
Geronimo Allison | Core muscle strain | Week-to-Week | Doubtful Week 10
Allison suffered a groin injury last week in practice. On Monday, multiple reports indicate Allison's injury is a core muscle strain. Players sometimes try to play through these strains but it's often too difficult for wide receivers to sink their hips and run routes at speed. Allison has already consulted Dr. William Meyers, who routinely performs surgery for these injuries in NFL athletes. Recovery usually takes 4-6 weeks but teams are increasingly using injured reserve with return designation in similar situations. Either way, expect Allison to miss at least a month unless he chooses to try to play through the strain.
Others of note:
***Chris Ivory was taken to the hospital after suffering a left shoulder injury during a goal line carry. The mechanism of injury did not look particularly violent and it's rare to require additional and emergent evaluation for a shoulder injury. It did not appear that Ivory sustained a dislocation. There aren't many shoulder injuries that might require immediate evaluation though the list could include a displaced clavicle fracture (odd but possible the team physicians elected to surgically repair due to scheduling issues). It's also possible the "shoulder" designation is misleading and Ivory's injury is to the sternoclavicular joint (which might threaten important blood vessels) or a lung injury (which would require additional imaging).
***Monday Update: Paul Richardson Jr finally decided his shoulder injury was too difficult to play through and will have surgery. Reports suggest his injury is a high-grade AC sprain requiring multiple months of rehab and recovery. He is out for the season.
Offensive line and defensive notes:
***The Ravens were without both starting offensive tackles on Sunday. Ronnie Stanley (ankle) and James Hurst (back) will have the bye week to recover. Hurst has been out multiple weeks. Stanley briefly returned in Week 8 but was unable to practice last week.
***The Washington offensive line is a mess. Already without tackle Trent Williams (thumb surgery), the team lost its other starting tackle and both starting guards on Sunday. Tackle Morgan Moses left with a nagging knee injury. Guard Brandon Scherff suffered a shoulder injury suspicious for a pectoral tendon tear. Guard Shaun Lauvao, already playing through a calf strain, left with a knee injury. Both Scherff and Lauvao will have MRIs on Monday and both are doubtful at best to return in Week 11.
Monday Update: Washington confirmed a pectoral tendon tear for Scherff and announced an ACL tear for Lauvao. Both will have season-ending surgery. Moses reportedly will try to play through an MCL sprain this week.
***The Miami offensive line situation is also concerning, with both tackles leaving with knee injuries. Laremy Tunsil told reporters his injury wasn't serious and Ja'Waun James returned to the game and played through pain. The Dolphins already have two starters on injured reserve at guard and center.
***Broncos center Matt Paradis will miss the rest of the season with a fibula fracture and probable ligament damage to his right ankle.
***Cleveland cornerback Denzel Ward left with a hip injury and didn't return.
Follow-up Appointments
Leonard Fournette | Aggravated right hamstring strain | Week-to-Week | Questionable Week 10
There were no local reports about Fournette's practice participation during the bye week. Doug Marrone wouldn't comment on Fournette's status early in the week, deferring to the practice participation that was never reported. It's likely Week 10 has been the target for some time but until you see Fournette fully practice, his availability remains in doubt.
Rob Gronkowski | Back / ankle injuries | Week-to-Week | Questionable Week 10
Gronkowski took a week off to recover from back spasms and rest a troublesome ankle in Week 7. His return in Week 8 wasn't inspiring. Though he played 68 snaps, he was struggling to move laterally and had no vertical explosiveness. The Patriots will try to get him right soon but the back condition is a concern for a player who has had multiple discectomies in his athletic career. New England travels to Tennessee this week, then has a Week 11 bye. Unless Gronkowski improves significantly this week, the team could choose to rest him through their bye and ready him for a playoff run.
Sony Michel | Left knee injury | Week-to-Week | Questionable Week 10
Michel had a full week of practice last week and was cleared to talk to the media in what seemed to be a very positive trend. The Patriots weren't convinced Michel could handle the workload they may have asked of him, however, and kept him inactive Sunday night. The specific nature of Michel's knee injury is still unknown. It's likely Michel will practice this week and again be considered questionable. Last week's reporting would suggest Michel can be considered probable to return. But he's now missed two weeks of action and the Patriots' Week 11 bye is looming. Don't expect much from Bill Belichick this week. We'll be stuck hoping for an actionable local report by the end of the week.
Ryan Tannehill | Right shoulder capsule injury | Week-to-Week | Doubtful Week 10 | Week 11+ Return
The Dolphins confirmed Ryan Tannehill suffered a shoulder capsule tear on a hit during their Week 5 game. If that's the entire story -- i.e. there are no associated rotator cuff or labral injuries -- Tannehill is unlikely to need surgery and his recovery time will be shorter. However, it's still unclear how quickly Tannehill will return. He's still not throwing in practice, which strongly suggests Week 11 is still a long shot.
Others of note:
***Stefon Diggs did not practice and was held out of Sunday's game with a rib injury. His injury is not believed to be significant and most expect him to return after the team's Week 10 bye. Watch for details on his practice participation.
***The Texans started the clock on D'Onta Foreman's return. He's been activated from the PUP list. While he has three weeks before he must be added to the active roster, there are reports he could be ready after Houston's Week 10 bye.
Offensive line and defensive notes:
***Khalil Mack (ankle) and Joey Bosa (foot) continue to miss time. Mack could return this week. Bosa remains multiple weeks away.
