On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls and the first since the 1967 Green Bay Packers to win three consecutive NFL championships. A familiar opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost to the Chiefs two years ago in Super Bowl LVII, stands in their way.
My colleague Colton Dodgson, a loyal Eagles fan, compiled his list of the top 20 Philadelphia Eagles players of the 2000s as a passion project. I cannot mirror Colton's fanboy exuberance toward his beloved Eagles while I compile my list of the top 20 Kansas City Chiefs players of the 2000s because I am a Cowboys fan. Thus, I wonβt be writing a Super Bowl Week feature article like this about my favorite team for a long time. Since the Chiefs began life as the Dallas Texans, theyβll do.
As a football enthusiast, I appreciate championship dynasties and the long stretches of playoff irrelevancy surrounding them. Even losing teams have legendary players, and dynasties cannot exist without them. Many more Chiefs deserve recognition here than I could include, and Iβm sure your list of the top 20 Kansas City Chiefs players of the 2000s will differ, so here we go.
Special Honorable Mention: Derrick Thomas
Hall-of-Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas easily would have been near the top of this list if his career had not tragically been cut short by complications arising from a car accident. The final game of the 1999 regular season, his last, was played in January 2000. While his playing career falls outside the timeframe of this article, he did technically play in the 2000s. This list would be incomplete without mentioning him.

Honorable Mentions
I chose to recognize five players as Honorable Mentions. In alphabetical order, they are Harrison Butker (2017-present), Trent Green (2001-2006), Trent McDuffie (2022-present), Larry Johnson (2003-2008), and Alex Smith (2013-2017). These players just missed the cut.
The Tennessee Titans have so many holes in the roster the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft could be available for trade, according to sources. Tennessee's brass appears open to giving QB Will Levis another shot or adding a free agent quarterback, with names like Sam Darnold (Vikings) and Justin Fields (Steelers) on the team's radar in March's free agency. ESPN's Dan Graziano speculates the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Jets all being potential suitors for the No. 1 pick.
Our view: The Titans are more than just a player away, so getting a haul for the no.1 overall pick would make sense. Now, they need a quarterback and there are two in consideration for that pick. As the pre-draft process continues, we'll see if the Titans show greater interest in Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) or Cam Ward (Miami). If that's the case, then they could stay at no.1 and take one of those potential franchise quarterbacks.
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent RB Nick Chubb said he hasn't had any contract discussions but hopes to re-sign with the Browns.
Our view: Chubb is one of the most naturally gifted runners in the league. Injuries have caught up to him, and that's why he's only played in 10 games over the last two seasons. While it's unlikely Chubb will be the back he was in 2022 (over 1,700 all-purpose yards), he can still be considered a strong part of a rotation. What's the price for that, and do the Browns want to pay it? These are questions to be answered with free agency about a month away.
Miami (Fla.) TE Elijah Arroyo 'is solidifying himself as a high Day 2 pick' in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.
Our view: Arroyo was impressive at the Senior Bowl earlier this year. He's a raw prospect, but coming out of Miami Arroyo has shown speed and playmaking ability. Like other Hurricanes tight ends before him (Jeremy Shockey, Jimmy Graham, David Njoku), Arroyo has the attention of the scouting community.
Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Tee Higgins' next contract will likely top $30 million per year, according to a majority of the team personnel that spoke with Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.
Our view: Higgins is likely to get around $30 million per year on the open market, and the Bengals are unlikely to keep him for that price as they need to get a deal done with Ja'Marr Chase. He will become one of the highest-paid receivers in the league this offseason, and then Higgins will have to work on his availability. In five pro seasons, Higgins has never played a full regular season schedule. Over the past two seasons, Higgins has only appeared in 12 games each year. When highly paid, that's something his new team will want to change.
πΊ 11 Dynasty Sleepers To Target Before the NFL Draft
The Dynasty Fantasy Football offseason is full swing! Join Sigmund Bloom and Cecil Lammey as they look at the biggest dynasty sleepers to target before the NFL Draft!
Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback for the Seahawks next season, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.
Our view: The Seahawks will continue with Smith, but they've got to also be thinking about their future at the quarterback position. While a great story, and we love what he's done in Seattle, Smith has almost certainly peaked as a pro. With a 'meh' quarterback class in 2025, Seattle could be doing some early scouting on passers who are eligible to come to the pros in 2026. Either way, Smith's days as the starter in Seattle are numbered.
Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett had 14 sacks in 2024, becoming the second player in NFL history to record at least 12 sacks in five consecutive seasons. The other is Hall Of Fame LB Lawrence Taylor.
Our view: Garrett wants to be traded away from the Browns so he can go to a contender. Already with a Hall of Fame resume, getting a ring would cement Garrett as one of the best pass-rushers of all time. The Browns are adamant they are not trading him, but that could just be posturing to drive the price up.
Among the biggest movers this week: Lamar Jackson surged 6 spots, Jayden Daniels climbed 4, and Bo Nix jumped 8. But which of these rising QBs most deserves the boost?
So today, we ask you Footballguys:
π³οΈ POLL: Which rising QB most deserves their recent NFFC ADP surge?
When you vote in the Poll below, you'll see the current standings, and we'll post the final results in the next edition of the Daily Update.
β
π³οΈ POLL: Will The Cleveland Browns trade DE Myles Garrett before the kickoff of the 2025 NFL Season?
Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs averaged 6.4 yards per touch in 2024, the most yards by any player with at least 300 touches in a season since Marshall Faulk in 2000.
Our view: Gibbs has a lot of Faulk to his game. He moves quickly and smoothly, and Gibbs can gash a team with explosiveness as a runner or receiver. Gibbs is a player who can work in tight spaces, and he wastes little motion. He's clearly a fantasy favorite and one of the players who makes watching football fun.
Green Bay Packers RB Josh Jacobs said he believes the team needs to add a proven No. 1 wide receiver this offseason.
Our view: Some want to make this statement more than it is; a mere statement of truth...and the truth isn't meant to make you feel good. The Packers don't have a true no.1 receiver and instead have spread the ball around in their passing game. How's that working out? Getting a stud, clear-cut no.1 receiver that QB Jordan Love could lean on could change the dynamics of this offense. Jacobs was not being disrespectful to any of his teammates, he was merely stating fact.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy is expected to start contract extension talks with the 49ers in the near future, and the talks likely will not drag out until training camp since both sides seem interested in agreeing to a deal, in the opinion of The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
Our view: The 49ers are trying to keep the core together to make another run, but now they'll be off Purdy's incredibly affordable rookie contract. Russini has reported that Purdy could "wind up" with a contract worth $55 to $60 million per season. That would make him a top-5 paid player at his position. A pretty cool outcome for a guy who was the last pick in the NFL draft a few years ago.
New York Jets WR Davante Adams has not talked with the team since they have hired general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.
Our view: It is not known if Adams will be playing for the Jets next season. In fact, a lot of things about the 2025 Jets are unknown at this time. Will QB Aaron Rodgers be with the team? Would Adams follow Rodgers if he winds up elsewhere? Jeremey Fowler, from ESPN, reports Adams would be open, if released this offseason, to signing with the Rams, Chargers or 49ers. Stay tuned.
