Welcome to the weekly Fantasy Notebook, the must-stop spot for keeping your finger on the pulse of Fantasy Nation. NFL news and developments drive fantasy values. The Notebook is here to keep you in the loop on all of it throughout the season.
Let's dive in . . .
SBLIX Is Here, But The Hunt For Value Never Ends
I know. We're all interested in Super Bowl LIX. Can the Eagles fly past the Chiefs, or will we see a Three-Peat?
And while I'll have some Super Bowl-related notes in The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly section below, the pursuit of 2025 value is a never-ending quest. It will remain the focus this week as well.
As we've done here the last two weeks, I'll examine one player who fell short of expectations in 2024 and one who exceeded them and assess their potential values this year.
Again, finding value in drafts is your path to fantasy success. It's also an offseason-long process. So this is just the starting point. We're setting baselines. Then we'll revisit these players over the coming months to see how things are progressing as the season draws nearer, so . . .
Taking Another Chance On Richardson?
Despite another disappointing season, Colts owner Jim Irsay retained coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard for the 2025 season.
"I've been evaluating our entire operation, and I believe in Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen and our collective ability to make the improvements needed to take us to the next level in 2025," Irsay said in a statement a few hours after the Colts' overtime victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars capped an 8-9 regular season.
Indianapolis has missed the playoffs four straight seasons and has gone 10 years without winning a division title. Ballard is 62-69-1 in eight seasons as GM, while Steichen is 17-17 in two seasons as coach.
This news means one thing for fantasy investors: Second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, benched midseason only to return to the lineup two weeks later, will get another shot to prove he can be a long-term answer at the position.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice (knee) is making good progress in his recovery from knee surgery, according to head coach Andy Reid.
Our view: Good news for Rice and the Chiefs here. He suffered a season-ending injury in Week 4 against the Chargers, and Rice has been on the road to recovery since then. We could see Rice back on the field at some point in training camp or the preseason. They'll need the help with DeAndre Hopkins, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, and Marquise Brown all scheduled to become free agents in 2025.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Skyy Moore (abdomen) was limited during practice Thursday, Feb. 6. QB Patrick Mahomes (ankle), P Matt Araiza (illness) and OT Jawaan Taylor (knee) fully participated in practice.
Our view: Mahomes is not 100 percent with this minor ankle injury, but he's going to be out there slinging it around on Super Sunday. He's facing a Vic Fangio defense that knows how to create pressure with only four rushers. While the Chiefs offense can live in the middle of the field with TE Travis Kelce, Fangio's squad can muddle things up for Mahomes and company.
Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and is looking forward to participating in offseason workouts.
Our view: Great news for the Vikings here. McCarthy was their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he missed his entire rookie season due to this knee injury. His fit with Kevin O'Connell will be fun to see develop over the next few years. McCarthy is calm in the pocket, can keep plays alive with his feet, and he's an accurate passer although his arm strength will be something to monitor.
Philadelphia Eagles OG Nick Gates (groin), DE Brandon Graham (elbow) and WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) were limited during practice Thursday, Feb. 6. LB Zack Baun (groin), DT Jalen Carter (illness), WR Britain Covey (neck), OG Landon Dickerson (knee), RB Kenneth Gainwell (concussion, knee), TE Dallas Goedert (ankle), C Cameron Jurgens (back) and TE C.J. Uzomah (abdomen) fully participated in practice.
Our view: Smith's status is something to monitor on Friday. He's a speed receiver, one of the best in the league, so a hamstring injury can slow him down a bit. Let's see if he's limited again or a full participant in the final injury report before the Super Bowl.
Among the biggest movers this week: Lamar Jackson surged 6 spots, Jayden Daniels climbed 4, and Bo Nix jumped 8. But which of these rising QBs most deserves the boost?
So today, we ask you Footballguys:
🗳️ POLL: Which rising QB most deserves their recent NFFC ADP surge?
When you vote in the Poll below, you'll see the current standings, and we'll post the final results in the next edition of the Daily Update.
Which team will Rams WR Cooper Kupp play for in 2005?
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow said he'd be willing to restructure his contract if it helped the team retain core players.
Our view: Burrow is talking about WR Ja'Marr Chase. The Bengals have no leverage, and they have to sign the best receiver in the league (arguably) to a contract that makes him the highest-paid receiver in NFL history. There are others the Bengals need to sign as well (Tee Higgins, Trey Hendrickson), but Chase is the main player to get paid this offseason.
Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Jameis Winston said he would be interested in signing with the Tennessee Titans this offseason.
Our view: Winston hits the open market with plenty of interest as a backup. The Titans are looking for a starter or at least someone to compete with Will Levis for the starting job. If the Titans select Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders with the no.1 overall pick, then Winston (or Levis) would just be seen as a veteran stopgap until one of those guys would be ready.
Former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman announced on his podcast on Thursday, Feb. 6, that he accepted a senior football adviser position with the New York Jets. He made it clear during his announcement that his job will be to act as a 'sounding board' for the final decision-makers: new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey.
Our view: The changes keep rolling in for the Jets and after a disappointing season, most seem to welcome a new direction.
Former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as passing-game coordinator.
Our view: Waldron joins the new Jaguars staff to help get the most out of Trevor Lawrence. Jaguars hired Vikings assistant OC Grant Udinski as their new offensive coordinator this week as well.
Atlanta Falcons WR Ray-Ray McCloud had a career-high 62 catches for 686 yards in 2024 after recording 90 catches for 768 yards in his first six seasons combined.
Our view: McCloud is signed through the 2025 season with a $4.1 million cap hit. We'll see if McCloud continues to be used in the same capacity with the Falcons offense this season. Michael Penix should look to McCloud as a reliable target who can make big plays.
Former QB Bruce Gradkowski was hired by the Detroit Lions as an offensive assistant.
Our view: Gradkowski has worked as the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Battlehawks (UFL,XFL) for the last couple of seasons. Now, the 10-year vet gets his first shot in the NFL with Dan Campbell's staff.
New Orleans Saints WR Bub Means (ankle) told WWL Radio's Jeff Nowak on Thursday, Feb. 6, that he was cleared in late January from the high-ankle injury he suffered in Week 8 and is now at 'full speed.'
Our view: Means is a special talent who can work as a deep threat. He needs to stay healthy, something that was a problem for him in 2024. Means is competing to be the Saints no.3 receiver
