Recently, we asked the Footballguys staff for their top rookies at each position. Over the next several weeks, we'll get deeper into the 2025 draft class and release our massive 2025 Footballguys Rookie Guide after the Super Bowl. For now, here's a quick look at how our staff sees the tight end position.

Remember that it is early in the process. Showcase events like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl will allow us to better compare these players, and the NFL Combine will add even more clarity.

Key

  • Rank: the player's rank at the position.
  • Pts: the number of points the player gained in the voting; the max changes based on how many staff members participated and how deep the voting was, but bigger numbers are always better.
  • Firsts: the number of first-place votes the player received from a staff member.

1. GB: Luke Getsy officially hired

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

Former Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been hired by the Green Bay Packers as a senior offensive assistant, according to sources.

Our view: Getsy was the Packers quarterbacks coach before leaving to become the Bears offensive coordinator in 2022. He moved on to the Raiders in 2024 but was fired during the season and returned to the Packers as an analyst after his dismissal.

2. SF: San Francisco hires Brant Boyer

Source: NFL.com - Around The NFL

Former New York Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer was hired by the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Jan. 27, as their new special teams coordinator.

Our view: Head coach Kyle Shanahan fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider following a season in which mistakes in the kicking game contributed to a 6-11 record. He found a proven option in Boyer who he hopes can provide needed improvement to a unit that finished last in the league in expected points added on special teams and near the bottom of nearly all efficiency stats involved with the kicking game. The 53-year-old Boyer ran the special teams for the Jets for the past nine seasons under three full-time head coaches. Boyer led a special teams unit that ranked tied for second with nine touchdowns scored, second with eight blocked punts, and tied for fifth in kick return coverage.

3. TB: Dave Ragone interviews in Tampa

Source: Buccaneers.com

Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone interviewed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Liam Coen left to become the Jaguars' head coach late last week, which leaves the Bucs looking for their fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Ragone spent the 2024 season as the quarterbacks coach for the Rams. He was the offensive coordinator for the Falcons for three seasons before joining Sean McVay's staff, and he's also worked for Chicago, Washington, and Tennessee since starting his NFL coaching career in 2011. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Coen once worked for the Rams, and Ragone is the third Rams assistant to interview with Tampa since his departure. Offensive assistant/pass game specialist Nate Scheelhaase and tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley met with the team on Monday. The Buccaneers have also interviewed Chargers pass game coordinator Marcus Brady and Vikings assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski.

4. DAL: Matt Eberflus secures Dallas DC job

Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero

Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus was hired as the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Eberflus has spent his entire coaching career on the defensive side of the ball and made his name as a DC in Indianapolis, directing a Colts unit to routine finishes in the upper half of the NFL in total yards allowed per game. They peaked in the 2020 season, finishing eighth in the category before Eberflus left to take over as coach of the Chicago Bears in 2022. Eberflus, who takes over for Mike Zimmer, will run a unit led by All-Pro rusher Micah Parsons, with the likes of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and DeMarvion Overshown also standing out as either proven or ascending talents. They finished 28th in total yards allowed and 24th in points allowed per game, but considering the personnel losses they sustained, those numbers can't be viewed in a vacuum. With an offseason to get healthy and for Eberflus to implement his system, the Cowboys are hoping for a bounce-back campaign in 2025.

5. JAX: Jags building around Trevor Lawrence

Source: Jacksonville.com - Juston W. Lewis

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence will be the focal point new head coach Liam Coen builds around. 'We've got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be a part of that process,' Coen said. 'He's earned that right. I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic more than I do already from afar. This will all be about Trevor right now.'

Our view: The 2021 NFL Draft's No. 1 overall pick, Lawrence, has shown plenty of promise, particularly in a 2022 Pro Bowl season -- his first under previous head coach Doug Pederson. However, he hasn't become the generational talent so many prognosticated. It is handling Lawrence's maturation that was paramount in owner Shad Khan's choice of Coen. "Our commitment to Trevor, I think it's well known. We believe in him, so it started with that," Khan said of the interview process. Considering Coen's work in 2024 with Baker Mayfield and the answers he gave Khan, the Jaguars owner was convinced. Under Coen's one-year watch, the Bucs were a top-four offense in scoring and yards while finishing in the top four in passing and rushing. Furthermore, coming off a Pro Bowl 2023 campaign, Mayfield had a career season in 2024. He threw for personal bests of 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Now, Coen will try to duplicate that success in Jacksonville.

6. PIT: Rooney: George Pickens Has Room To Grow

Source: ESPN.com - Brooke Pryor

Echoing the words of his head coach, Pittsburgh Steelers owner and president Art Rooney II said talented but mercurial wide receiver George Pickens has "room to grow." Rooney added: "Every team seems to have one or two guys in that room that are -- you have to manage them correctly. I still think George has enough talent that we've got to try to work and see if we can get him to reach his, fulfill the talent that he really has. Who knows if we can get there, we'll see."

Our view: Two weeks earlier, Mike Tomlin acknowledged Pickens had done some growing during the 2024 season, but there was "a heck of a lot more ground to be covered." Though he missed three games with a hamstring injury, Pickens finished the regular season with 900 yards on 59 catches and scored three touchdowns. He also had two games with at least 100 receiving yards but averaged a career-low 15.3 yards per reception. ESPN.com's Brooke Pryor went on to remind readers that between bursts of productivity and highlight-reel catches, Pickens' third season with the Steelers included a series of on-and-off field incidents, including multiple unsportsmanlike penalties and being late for the Christmas Day game against the Chiefs. Pickens is set to enter the final year of his contract in 2025, but Rooney said the organization hasn't started talking about extending the wide receiver yet. The Steelers typically don't negotiate contracts in-season.

7. DET: John Morton to run the offense in Detroit

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Denver Broncos passing coordinator John Morton was named the new offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Morton, 55, spent the 2022 season with the Lions as the team's senior offensive assistant, so he's familiar with head coach Dan Campbell and the Detroit offense. Still, as NFL.com suggests, he'll have a massive task ahead maintaining Detroit's high-octane offense that was top five in points and yards in each of predecessor Ben Johnson's three seasons as offensive coordinator. In 2024, Detroit boasted the No. 1 scoring offense and the No. 2 unit in total yards. Though it's a tough act to follow, Morton will find a cornucopia of talent such as offensive tackle Penei Sewell, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and quarterback Jared Goff. We'll watch developments in Detroit closely, but trusting in Campbell and the talent will be the default position for now.

8. JAX: Anthony Campanile meets with Jacksonville

Source: Jaguars.com

Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Anthony Campanile interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars regarding their defensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Campanile joins Rams pass game coordinator and assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant, Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, and Vikings pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach Daronte Jones as the current candidates for the spot on Liam Coen's staff. Campanile joined the Packers in 2024 after spending four seasons as the linebackers coach in Miami. He also coached at Michigan, Boston College, and Rutgers before moving into the NFL.

9. CIN: Erick All likely to miss entire 2025 season

Source: The Athletic - Paul Dehner Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Erick All (knee) is reportedly expected to be sidelined for the entire 2025 season due to the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered on Nov. 3.

Our view: According to The Athletic's Paul Dehner Jr., All went through complications with his ACL tear recovery, pushing back his return timeline to 2026. Dehner noted another surgery is required. This could put an even greater emphasis on retaining Mike Gesicki in free agency after he posted 65 catches for 665 yards last season. All notched 20 catches for 158 yards before getting hurt against Las Vegas.

10. MIA: Craig Aukerman joins Miami's coaching staff

Source: Outkick.com - Armando Salguero

Former Tennessee Titans special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman was hired to the same post by the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Aukerman, 48, last coached in 2023 under then Titans' coach Mike Vrabel. He has served as special teams coordinator for all of Vrabel's six seasons as Tennessee's head coach. He was previously a special teams coordinator for the Chargers in 2016 and was an assistant special teams coordinator for Tennessee and Jacksonville. Miami fired former special teams coordinator Danny Crossman earlier this month after three seasons with the team.

11. CLE: Bill Musgrave To Serve As QB Coach In Cleveland

Source: Profootballtalk.com - Josh Alper

The Browns stayed inside the organization to find their new offensive coordinator, and they will do the same to fill their quarterback coach opening. According to multiple reports, the team will move Bill Musgrave into the spot left open after Ashton Grant left for the same job with the Patriots.

Our view: Musgrave was a senior offensive assistant in Cleveland for the last two years. He has extensive experience as both an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach. He filled both roles at Cal before joining the Browns and has worked with eight other NFL teams since ending his time as a quarterback in the league. Tommy Rees was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator, and the Browns have yet to find a new coach to fill his former spot. Head coach Kevin Stefanski will call the plays this season.

12. GB: Special Teams Coordinator Rich Bisaccia Extended

Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - Tom Silverstein

The Packers signed assistant head coach / special teams Rich Bisaccia to an extension, sources told Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel staffer Tom Silverstein.

Our view: League sources told Silverstein there were rumblings that Bisaccia might retire, but the new deal assures he'll return as special teams coordinator and head coach Matt LaFleur's game management adviser. According to Silverstein, Bisaccia, one of the highest-paid special teams coordinators in the NFL, had one year remaining on his contract. It is believed another year was added, guaranteeing that Bisaccia, 64, would have plenty of incentive to stick around at least two more years.

13. JAX: Jonathan Cooley being considered for Jacksonville DC job

Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

Carolina Panthers defensive pass game coordinator Jonathan Cooley is of interest to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who requested to interview him for their defensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Our view: Cooley was hired by Carolina in 2023 when he began with the organization as their secondary/cornerbacks coach. He was promoted to his current passing game coordinator position before the start of the 2024 campaign. Previously a member of the Los Angeles Rams' staff, Cooley has already shared a sideline with new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen. They crossed paths in 2022 when Cooley was the defensive backs coach and Coen the offensive coordinator.

14. BUF: Josh Allen Dealing With New Wrist Injury Heading Into Offseason

Source: Profootballtalk.com - Myles Simmons

Bills quarterback Josh Allen revealed in his season-ending press conference on Monday that he suffered a new injury that could affect his availability for this week's Pro Bowl Games. Allen had his right hand wrapped during the news conference and said he didn't know if he'll participate later this week. "I got a little banged-up hand right now -- a wrist," Allen said. "So, I got to talk with docs right now and figure it out. But we'll see."

Our view: Allen, who said the injury was brand new, also noted during his news conference that while he doesn't anticipate any offseason procedures, he does plan to take some time just to let his body heal. "Got bumps and bruises from last night, took a few shots, and just trying to make sure that my body's in as good as condition as it can be -- giving maybe a week or two and just kind of getting back to work," Allen said of his plans. We'll watch for more, but assuming all is well, there's no reason Allen won't be viewed as a top-two fantasy asset at his position heading into 2025 drafts.
