Recently, we asked the Footballguys staff for their top rookies at each position. Over the next several weeks, we'll get deeper into the 2025 draft class and release our massive 2025 Footballguys Rookie Guide after the Super Bowl. For now, here's a quick look at how our staff sees the quarterback position.
Remember that it is early in the process. Showcase events like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl will allow us to better compare these players, and the NFL Combine will add even more clarity.
Key
Rank: the player's rank at the position.
Pts: the number of points the player gained in the voting; the max changes based on how many staff members participated and how deep the voting was, but bigger numbers are always better.
Firsts: the number of first-place votes the player received from a staff member.
There already has been a lot of chatter about whether or not the Jets and Aaron Rodgers will continue their partnership into the 2025 season. The Jets now have hired Aaron Glenn as the team's head coach and Darren Mougey as the team's general manager. They will be tasked with speaking with Rodgers and charting a path forward. When will we find out more information, though? On Sunday, FOX insider Jay Glazer reported that he spoke to Glenn, and a decision could be coming "much sooner than later."
Our view: Glenn told Glazer he doesn't "want to drag this out." Rodgers is under contract, and there may not be too many better options than him out there, at least for 2025. While this is the case, he hasn't announced if he will play in 2025, and also, does New York want him back? There have been rumors that Glenn and Rodgers could be open to continuing the partnership, but this doesn't mean it'll happen. We'll be watching closely.
Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley was awarded a $250,000 bonus for the Eagles winning the NFC Championship Game, and he could receive another $250,000 if they win the Super Bowl.
Our view: Barkley originally signed a three-year, $37.75 million contract with the Eagles last March after his six-year run with the New York Giants ended. He proceeded to post career numbers as Philadelphia's top offensive weapon, becoming just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards. Barkley ended the 2024 regular season just 101 yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson's all-time single-season mark. Barkley was also fantasy's RB1 overall through Week 17 (Jahmyr Gibbs moved past him when Barkley sat out Week 18) and will be a prime candidate to be the No. 1 pick overall in 2025 drafts.
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is close to finalizing a contract extension Monday, Jan. 27.
Our view: The new deal comes after Monken led the Ravens to their first-ever No. 1 ranking in offense and helped quarterback Lamar Jackson to his best statistical season. In Monken's two seasons, Baltimore has averaged the second-most yards (397.6) and the second-most points (29.4). Last season, the Ravens led the NFL with 424.9 yards per game, finishing No. 1 in total yards for the first time in the franchise's 29-year existence. Monken was hired to upgrade Baltimore's passing attack. This season, Lamar Jackson recorded career highs in passing yards (4,172) and touchdown passes (41). From a fantasy perspective, the continuity is great; high-end production for the players involved is even better.
Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid (knee) played through a torn PCL, fellow TE Dawson Knox told reporters Monday, Jan. 27.
Our view: In addition to playing through the PCL injury, Knox said Kincaid aggravated the other knee. "It's insane what he's played through," Knox said of his teammate. Kincaid had two catches for 13 yards in Sunday's AFC championship game. The second-year tight end missed three games during the regular season with an injury to his left knee suffered in Week 10 against the Indianapolis Colts. Kincaid was full-go for the playoffs, though, and had four catches for 58 yards on five targets combined in the wild-card and divisional rounds. He had a postseason-high four targets against the Chiefs. It's safe to say Kincaid, who was TE5 in 2024 drafts, will be available later in drafts this year after finishing the season as TE26.
The Lions appear to have settled on their choice to replace Ben Johnson as their offensive coordinator. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team is working to hire Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton. Morton is traveling to Detroit to meet with the team.
Our view:
While Morton has spent the last two seasons in Denver, he is a familiar face in Detroit. He was on Dan Campbell's staff in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant, and the two men were both on the same Saints staff earlier in their careers. Morton has also worked for the Raiders, 49ers, Jets, and at USC over the last two decades. We'll follow up if/when an official announcement comes.
Veteran tight end Zach Ertz signed a one-year deal to join the Commanders last offseason as a free agent. But playing alongside rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, Ertz illustrated he's still plenty productive. And now, as he heads into free agency, he not only has no plans to retire but also appears to want to be back with Washington in 2025. "It was a one-year [deal] so far," Ertz said, "but I feel like we're just scratching the surface as a quarterback and tight end combination."
Our view:
While Ertz acknowledged the uncertainty of the future, he did state plainly, "I still want to play football next year." Ertz caught 66 passes for 654 yards with seven touchdowns during the regular season. He then caught 18 passes for 155 yards with a TD during the playoffs. We'll be watching for more.
Former Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown has found a landing spot. According to multiple reports, Brown is headed to the Patriots to be their offensive passing game coordinator/tight ends coach.
Our view: Brown, 38, held three different positions with the Bears last year -- passing game coordinator, offensive coordinator, and interim head coach. He was elevated to the latter position after Matt Eberflus was fired in late November. Chicago went 1-4 with Brown as the interim coach before hiring Ben Johnson to take over the full-time role last week. Brown will work under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on new head coach Mike Vrabel's staff.
Steelers president Art Rooney II has weighed in on what he'd like to see the team do at the quarterback position. The Steelers had Russell Wilson and Justin Fields on one-year contracts during the 2024 season, and both of them started games during the regular season. "I think they're both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them, so that'll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward," Rooney said via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com.
Our view: Wilson got the majority of the work, and the Steelers did not make a change even as the offense's performance cratered in the final weeks. Head coach Mike Tomlin was noncommittal about any plans that the team has at the position, but Rooney's comments are worth noting. The Steelers can start talks on a contract with both quarterbacks at any point, but there was no word on Monday about how quickly Rooney would like to see things move on that front.
